Union
Government has launched IAP HealthPhone programme, world’s largest
digital mass education programme to address malnutrition in women and
children. It was launched by Union Minister of Women and Child
Development Maneka Gandhi in New Delhi. This programme was developed by
the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) in partnership with the Union
Ministry of Women and Child Development, UNICEF and is supported by
Vodafone India. IAP HealthPhone programme aims to tackle the challenge
of malnutrition in mothers and children across India.It is a
public-partnership initiative that leverages the increasing penetration
of mobile phones in the country to educate over 6 million girls and
women between 13 and 35 years of age and their families on better health
and nutrition practices by 2018.

Singh won gold medal in men’s shot put event in the 21st Asian
Athletics Championships on 3 June 2015. Inderjeet, a silver medallist in
2013 World University Games and a bronze medal winner in last year’s
Asian Games in Incheon, clinched the gold by heaving the iron ball to a
new championship record of 20.41m, which he achieved in his fourth
attempt.

and Belarus 3 June signed six agreements to enhance bilateral co –
operation. These include agreement on Textiles, protocol to amend the
agreement between two countries for avoidance double taxation, MOU
between Prasar Bharati and National State TV and Radio company of
Belarus Broadcasting Corporation in the presence of Indian President and
his Belarussian Counterpart.

Dr.Achyuta Samanta Won Isa Award For Service To Humanity 2015
Dr.
Achyuta Samanta, founder of KIIT and KISS, has been conferred with the
‘Isa Award for Service to Humanity 2015 in Bahrai. He received the award
in the field of ‘Social Welfare and Fighting against Poverty’.The
award was bestowed upon Dr. Samanta by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
The Isa Award for Service to Humanity has been instituted to honour
these exceptional people, and celebrate their selfless and tireless
efforts to create a better world for future generations. Established in
2009 by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the King of Bahrain,
the Isa Award is granted every two years to either individuals or
organisations who have been selected through a gruelling process by an
expert panel of jurists. The laureate will receive a Certificate of
Merit, a Gold Medal and a prize of USD 1 million.
Sundaram Ravi Inducted into the Elite Panel of ICC Umpires For 2015-16
Eminent
Indian umpire Sundaram Ravi, along with Chris Gaffaney of New Zealand,
was on 4 June inducted into the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires for
2015-16. Sundaram Ravi thus ended 11-year long wait for an Indian umpire
to make place in ICC’s Elite Panel of Umpires. ICC announced the
prestigious panel for 2015-2016 following an annual review and selection
process.
Delhi Metro Gets Its First Driverless Train
The
Delhi Metro on 4 June received its first train which is capable of
running without a driver. The train is equipped with several advanced
features and will be operational on sections of Phase-III of the
network, set to be operational by December 2016.
India Joins The MCAA On Automatic Exchange of Information
India
joined the Multilateral Competent Authority Agreement (MCAA) on
Automatic Exchange of Financial Account Information (AEOI) in Paris,
France, alongwith Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, Indonesia and New
Zealand. Multilateral Competent Authority Agreement (MCAA) is an
agreement which provides for establishment of an international platform
that would allow exchange of information on an annual basis, including
account balances. It is expected to tighten the noose on those having
black money overseas. Fifty-one countries had joined MCAA on 29 October
2014, in Berlin. Switzerland became the fifty-second country on 19
November 2014. On 3 June 2015, 6 countries – India, Australia, Canada,
Costa Rica, Indonesia and New Zealand joined MCAA by signing the
agreement in Paris. Till now 94 countries have committed to exchange
information on an automatic basis from 2017 onwards, according to the
new global standards on automatic exchange of information, known as
common reporting standards (CRS) on automatic exchange of information
(AEOI).

World Environment Day Observed Across The World
World
Environment Day (WED) was observed across the world on 5 June 2015. The
day is observed every year to raise the awareness around the globe for
taking positive action to protect nature and planet earth. Theme for
2015 is — ” Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care”. The
host country for the WED 2015 is Italy and the celebrations will be
organized by Expo Milano 2015 that will run from 1 May to 31 October
2015 and will see the participation of 140 plus countries.United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP) established in 1972 is the voice of United
Nations for the environment. UNEP is a body that acts as a catalyst,
advocate, educator and facilitator to promote the wise use and
sustainable development of the global environment.
Petteri Taalas Appointed Secretary-General of WMO
Petteri
Taalas, Director-General of the Finnish Meteorological Institute, has
been appointed as the next Secretary-General of the World Meteorological
Organization (WMO) for a four-year mandate starting 1 January 2016. He
succeeds Michel Jarraud (France). Taalas has been the Director-General
of the Finnish Meteorological institute since 2002, excluding 2005 –
2007 when he worked as a Director of Development and Regional Activities
department of WMO.
CIMAP Researchers Successfully Complete Whole Genome Sequencing of Tulsi
Scientists
at Central Institute of Medicinal & Aromatic Plants (CIMAP),
Lucknow succeeded in whole genome sequencing of Holy basil or Tulsi
(Ocimum sanctum). CIMAP is a frontier plant research laboratory of
Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). This is the first
report of complete genome sequence of Tulsi, which is both used as an
essential medicinal plant and revered as Vishnupriya and worshipped for
over 3000 years in India.
Taj Mahal Ranked Third Among World’s Top Landmarks
Travellers
from across the globe have ranked Taj Mahal among the top three
landmarks in the world. According to TripAdvisor’s 2015 Travellers
Choice Attractions Awards, Taj Mahal was ranked third in the list of top
landmarks.The top two places were taken by Machu Picchu in Peru and
Angkor Wat in Cambodia respectively.The Tower of London was named as the
best rated landmark in the UK with Edinburgh Castle in Scotland in
second place.
